This little church is a sheer delight and should be visited at least once in your lifetime. No running water or electricity still, apparently. Ancient plaster murals are still just visible, and other interesting historical detail. Close to the river Arun and Ford Marina, and the southern railway crosses the river. Where the Weymouth and Arun canal joined the river. Peaceful.
Standing in fields in a scenic isolated, riverbank location, this beautiful, Saxon-origin church feels secluded and untouched, despite being less than five minutes walk from HMP Ford in one direction and Ford Station in the other. It is a small, ancient, flint building, largely dating from the pre-conquest 11th century, although one wall is as recent as the 14th century! . Inside, a surprise awaits - this is no ordinary country church interior. The walls are pastel pink, the windows are still Saxon, there is no electricity - and it contains some stunning Saxon and Medieval wall paintings. A saxon cross is painted on one wall, there are some fragmentary saints on the opposite wall, and above the Norman Chancel Arch is a large and vivid 14th Century painting of The Last Judgement: horned demons pitchfork naked damned souls into the giant, gaping, red jaws of Hell. Despite this rather horrifying depiction of the torments to come, St Andrew By The Ford is a very peaceful, comforting little church, as the comments in the Visitors Book testify. It won't take you long to admire all this small building has to offer, but it is definitely worth a detour to visit. A little further up the road, past the station, is another historic church, St Mary Tortington, also worth a visit
The church is set back from the road and surrounded by trees, so unless you know it's there, you'll miss it. An information card is available inside to take with you as you explore inside and out. A leaflet with photos can be bought for a pound. It's nearly a 1,000 years old church and is well worth a visit.
This is an amazing church. I had driven past it loads of times and didn't even know it was there. A magic little piece of heaven in beautiful surroundings. Well worth a visit and a walk down to the river. No mains gas, electricity or water and dates back to Saxon times.
Stunning and to think it was built in the 1070s shortly after the Norman Conquest. A hidden gem.
A simplistic church that still has character and a must for church lovers .
