Story

Chris Robinson opened his shop New Street on the Barbican after handing his last piece of academic work in September 1978. Over the next few years he went around the City producing hundreds of original drawings of the area, pen and ink illustrations that he made into prints and then, in 1982, started writing about them for the Plymouth Herald.

Chris’s first book, Plymouth As Time Draws On, followed in 1985 and since then more than 25 titles have appeared on various aspects of the City. The latest, Victorian Plymouth, is a brand new offering - not to be confused with a book of engravings he produced 25 years ago. It is a fascinating photographic tour around the City and it's satellite communities in the Victorian era.

In 1993 Chris and his colleague, Alan Tibbitts, also ventured into the film market and to date they have produced a dozen full length films about Plymouth, including the latest, Plymouth City Centre, Then & Now.

Also available from Chris's Grade II* shop, at 34 New Street, are a selection of notelets, cards and framed, colour-washed prints.

This an excellent little book shop of superb books by local historian Chris Robinson. There can be few cities as lucky as Plymouth to have such a detailed coverage of it's admittedly rich history and heritage.

Well worth wandering in behind the main frontage of the Barbican to find this little privately run shop. Full of sketches and hand coloured prints of Plymouth over the years, as well as other locally based items including DVDs covering Plymouth's recent history. Added to this is the one thing you can't buy or even access online - a talk with the owner who can explain a good deal of Plymouth's history. If you have a few minutes ask him about the ghost! He is a mine of information and is not just there to sell you things. For instance, he hand colours the prints amongst other things. If you're a traveller you'll walk away with something different; if you're a local you may just be able to revisit your past.
