Former GWR Branchline in South Oxfordshire running heritage steam and diesel trains

Story

Enjoy a five mile round trip on The Cholsey and Wallingford Railway - a preserved former Great Western Railway branchline in South Oxforshire. Our line links the national railway network at Cholsey, with the historic market town of Wallingford. Trains run on selected weekends and bank holidays throughout the year and, where available, are steam hauled.

Known locally as "The Bunk", passenger services ceased in 1959. Having secured the line in 1981, the 100% volunteer run C&WR Preservation Society now aims to enhance the facilities that the railway offers and to improve our Wallingford site. The railway aims to offer steam hauled trains where possible, but also operates an interesting fleet of 08 class diesel locomotives.

Way, way, way more to this than the website portrayed. Extremely happy we went to the military vehicle weekend. Obviously the weather played it's part in a very enjoyable day out at this lovely little railway. The event coincided with a classic car parade from the nearby fields, so it was a great day out altogether. At the railway there was a display of war themed vehicles, people dressed in period costumes with militaria of all kinds on display. And to cap it all, a live period singsong from the wonderful Fiona Harrison, which was excellent! All that said, I would definitely recommend a visit at any opportunity. The hardworking volunteers who run it were all extremely helpful, friendly and clearly happy to have so many people at the event. The railway itself is the whole of a former branch line from the Great Western mainline at Cholsey, where you can still join from the national Network. It mainly operates with heritage diesels, and you can ride as many of the trains you wish for £13 for adults and enjoy the lovely Oxfordshire countryside and wildlife. Something unique to this line is it's connection to Agatha Christie, who was a long time resident of Cholsey. St Mary's Church is her final resting place and a shortish 15 minute walk from Cholsey station. Some facts: Magnetic Totems: Apparently on order Ticket: Traditional small card - big tick Stations! Two - one with connection to the mainline a calling point between Reading and Didcot. Parking: At Wallingford. Good. Thanks to Lidl who let them use the back of their car park. USP: The happy smiling and waving drivers and passengers on the A329, which the railway crosses just outside Wallingford. But unusual!
The railway organises a wonderful 1940s weekend, with something for everyone. Demonstrations or stalls on all aspects of home front during the war and more. Well worth a visit and definitely suitable for children.
We visited 10th December for the Polar Express Experience. The staff were amazing; especially on the train. Had some food and drink stalls which smelt appetising. The gift shop was expensive in my opinion. The only thing that let the whole thing down was the toilet access. Inadequate for the volume of people with no running water or alcohol gel. Parking at the multi storey and bus transfer were very efficient. As a family of 5 we have to be split up across the carriage which is always a little awkward. Would highly recommend.
Had the best Santa express ride with my daughters their husbands and 2 grandsons. Santa was the very best and we danced on the train very funny All the elf's were fantastic and the children loved them. A very enjoyable train ride. 5 Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
An old fashioned train ride through our beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.....with the most delicious cream tea. The volunteers who run the railway make it a wonderful experience. All welcome. If you enjoy a cream tea whilst chugging along....this is for you. Check out the website for dates and times.
What a really love day out! Went with the family 3 generations and fun was had by all! Lovely people running it all. Quirky old fashioned cafe selling toasted sandwiches cake and tea and coffee. Gift shop. Museum. All put together really well. And a train ride! What more could you want? You can even buy rail chairs for £12. Bargain!
Could do with some more local volunteers, and some local sewing enthusiasts to update some upholstery and a bit of a clean...i think this could be a great local attraction, buts trainneeds some more love and some new idea input to draw in the crowds....Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
That's the spot to go spoil the kids with vivid imaginations of the 'proverbial' polar express... During cold winter days of December... Warm regards!Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
Excellent to experience first hand the newly restored Maidenhead Station canopy now in pride of place at Wallingford Station. The tea and cake on the train were very enjoyable too!
