The caves were dug for chalk used in lime burning and brick making for the Building of London, as well as for flints to fire the tinderboxes and flintlock guns of years ago.First open to the public in 1900 as a showplace, the guides told the Victorians history of Romans, Druids and Saxons, Smuggling and Murder."

Lovely 1 mile walk through the caves with a sometimes nice but very grumpy snappy tour guide providing the history of the caves, although we dare ask a question! Lit up by the adults carrying real lanterns which makes this an exceptional experience for the family. Tour is about 1 hour, wear masks whilst inside and please dont wake the cat whose snoozing in the office. There is a cafe providing a varied menu, suitable for all, ice creams and drinks, large car park and toilets. Easy to get to and a Harvester is nearby if you prefer a more substantial menu for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Yes I would go again.
This was an wonderful experience with a knowledgeable, funny and interactive tour guide. The cafe has good food as well and a welcoming atmosphere. The caves at Chislehurst in Kent, are a labyrinth of man-made tunnels, forming a maze covering over 6 Hectares and are up to 30 metres below the surface! In World War 2 up to 15 000 people stayed there sheltering from the bombing of London!
Great experience. Our guide was Peter he seemed very experienced and knowledgeable, was humorous and spoke clearly and eloquently. He demonstrated a game that children played down the caves during the war, but didn't really explain how it worked, so that was a little confusing. But all in all a very good experience, enjoyed by the wife and i and our granddaughter.
What a fantastic find this was and well worth the hours drive. I’d recommend booking your tickets in advance because it’s busy and you could end up disappointed. Tickets are cheap and the cafe was reasonably priced, and although not a large selection of food it was nice. The tour guide was brilliant, funny and knowledgeable. Made it interesting. The caves were brilliant, absolutely amazing and really enjoyed it. The tour was about 50 minutes in total. No photos allowed. The lamps were a nice touch. Shame can’t see more of the caves but will definitely go again.
The place isn't hard to find taking in account where it's situated. Had a nice time here too bad the tour isn't longer. Walking with the petroleum lamp makes you feel more close to the underground feeling. Was interesting to learn that famous people held concerts underground. It's amazing what people dug the tunnels back in the time without technology. It can get chilli. Next to the caves you'll The Labyrinthe where you can have role play fun. Coming with public transport closest stops are Chislehurts Train Station and bus stop Chislehurts Station stop A and B. The caves are 10 minute walk.
I recently had a tour here and l found the caves very interesting. The tour lasted about 50 mins and the guide was very knowledgeable. While on the tour you are not allowed to take photos/videos of the cave or use any flash. I would recommend wearing good shoes and taking a jumper as it is cold underground even if it is a warm day. Take a lamp for light and warmth too! There is a cafe selling food and drinks and a shop too.
We were today. Makes an amazing impression, you can feel all the energy accumulated there, the place has many interesting and terrifying stories at the same time. Definitely worth visiting. In the cafe you can eat a tasty burger with fries or have a good coffee.
Very interesting place, and the caves were much more extensive than I anticipated with miles and miles of caves going back to Druid's, Roman, and Anglo Saxon times. Though they are old, the current interior is mostly World War II themed, including some occasionally odd/creepy mannequins setup to show how it was almost a mini underground city during the bombing raids. It's located in the middle of residential area, and accessible via a one hour tour Wednesday to Sunday. I thought I may be claustrophobic but it was fine for me as at 5'2" I basically never had to duck my head nor felt squeezes for space. It is however pitch black - they provided torches but had us temporarily turn them off though with an option not to if scared. No photos allowed inside. Ample parking. There is a small older style cafe for tea/coffee whilst you wait, and mostly clean though small toilets.
Accompanied my son's school as a parent volunteer. Had a good time. Kids had a great time as well. The caves have a great history and quite intriguing to learn that more than 40 thousand people took shelter in the caves at its peak.
Visited the Caves mine with my girlfriend. She visited as a child and recommended it for a day out. Within ULEZ boundary on A20 do bear this in mind however there js free parking on site. Bus services ran nearby but I do not recall the service numbers. Very enjoyable and engaging tour courtesy of Peter. His intimate, personal knowledge and near lifetime affiliation with the Caves gave it a layer of affection as he gave us a guided tour. Paraffin lamps for 16+ visitors added a charm and fanfare to proceedings. An enjoyable 1+ hour tour of a unique corner of the London/Kent suburbs.
