A real gem to be treasured! This is a must stop destination in the city of Chester, and for those interested in history, church architecture and stained glass, has to be on your itinerary. Entry is free, but there is the option to tap your card to make an easy donation, and there’s also the opportunity for gift aid.nWe also opted for the guided tour £3 and I highly recommend it. Our guide was Matt, and his knowledge of architecture, history, and the cathedral, along with his enthusiasm, made for an unforgettable experience. We were lucky to be the only people who had booked the tour so we felt quite privileged to have him all to ourselves!nFrom its beginnings as a Benedictine abbey, the cathedral has a rich history and has many interesting and noteworthy features, from the Victorian mosaics to the elaborate rood screen, and quire stalls.nWe also enjoyed a light meal in the cafe which is housed in the former monastery refectory, complete with pulpit from which a monk would preach while the rest of the brothers would eat. We enjoyed the cream of tomato soup and the Welsh rarebit, both of which were very tasty. It is spacious and you might even bag a sunny spot if you’re lucky!nThere is a substantial gift shop with a wide variety of options to purchase - exquisite Christmas decorations we visited at the end of October, religious items, books, food and drink items etc.nIf you love visiting churches, admiring beautiful architecture or just want to do something different, I cannot recommend this enough. I don’t give “top marks” easily, but it is thoroughly deserved!
What an incredibly beautiful place it is. Its Grade I listed building but couldn't believe the entry was free. Its a donation if you wanna make otherwise free entry. The place was beautifully lit up with lights and highlighting the architecture in impressive way.nnThis place has a long history from 10th century to 16th century. It took 275 years to built this Cathedral. Every corner of it has history and detailed work which is showing how they built it in past without all the modern machinery and equipments. Glass work on windows are master piece so do the ceiling golden work.nnThe cafe inside was also spacious and worth having a cup of coffee under the roof of this building. A gift shop at the end of tour is nice as well. Definitely worth to visit if you are in Chester in case if you wanna know the history of Chester
Beautiful cathedral all decked out for Christmas with lots of decorated trees around as part of the festival. We visited on a Sunday when it is free to get in but we still payed a contribution towards its upkeep as buildings like this are a money pit and we all need to help preserve them for future generations. The choir and organist were practicing ready for the next Sunday service and it was lovely to hear them as a non member of any religion as the acoustics were fabulous
Very welcoming staff ,lovely beautiful cathedral and gardens ,tried to do tower tour but got scared as narrow and claustrophobic plus height....however friendly helpful staff helped me back down offered me water and a sit-down to recover thank you so much for that as it helped ,nnIf you don't like narrow claustrophobic spaces plus heights do not go on a tower tour it may shock you a bit.nnI still had a very enjoyable day spent most of the morning in the cathedral plus I went to the cafe when I needed a drink .It was a very nice shop very friendly welcoming staff who help you when needed.
Beautiful lights that light up the place and So many Christmas trees to delight the young and the old. Well done Chester cathedral you have made a calm relaxing atmosphere for everyone to wander around and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.
