Open weekend at the castle, courtesy of English Heritage Great experience with lots of reenactment and displays. Best of all the people themselves with their friendly attitude and wealth of historical knowledge. Will be going again!!!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Super day out. All the volunteers were excellent with knowledge of the tower and castle. The reenactments of the parliamentarians and cavaliers was brilliant. They fired firearms from the period too. We parked at a park and ride then cycling along the canal which added to the days enjoyment.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
We came to visit when they had a world war 1 exhibition and it was free entry donations only Had the opportunity to wear a medieval knight outfit and learn more of their fighting equipment. Enjoyable experience. The tower offers you views of the city too. Very helpful friendly staff. RecommendedVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
The castle entrance is tucked away in the corner of a car park, so not so easy to spot if the arrive from the direction of the town. We were so lucky to be there on a re- enactment day which was excellent. The castle displays are very informative as were the enthusiastic guides. Good. The volunteers are really lovely and informative. It appears to be free all of the time don't even have to show your EH card. It's a fairly small attraction and gets busy. Check the English Heritage website for opening times as it doesn't always appear to be open during the week.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

A really enjoyable visit during Heritage Open Days. Enthusiastic and information staff.
Castle just open on weekends in March. We went on a Monday. Great cafe in big car park at foot of castle. We walked the walls. Been before but was still a lovely walk.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
It's not open often, but the reenactment weekends are great fun and really bring the castle alive with a mixture of costumed volunteers, musicians, EH interpreters and activities. At the Medieval Deva weekend, the focus was on the 15th and 13th centuries of English history. Earlier reenactors filled the courtyard and Agricola Tower with crafts, militaria and a Barber Surgeon while down on the green, the Savile family, Wars of the Roses reenactors, entertained with dancing, archery and living history with the tale of Saint George and the Dragon thrown in for good measure. A great, free day for anyone who was passing.
