Absolutely loved this little Church. So much history inside and out. A wonderful experience, thank you Escomb Saxon Church.
Such an evocative location, this simple church building has so many features that connect the visitor with its early Christian history and the important characters from that era, some 1300 years ago ... but also indirectly with the Romans from half a millennium earlier.
Fascinating historical Saxon church. We appreciated the information cards, which were placed on the ends of pews and other locations. Very interesting and factual. Well worth a visit, as so much history.
Saxon church in the middle of a housing state it is lovely
Lovely little church. Dates back to the 7th century. Most of the stones used to build Escomb Church are from Vinovia, the Roman fort at Binchester, County Durham. There is a stone with the inscription on it, which reads "LEG VI" upside down meaning 6th Legion.
Absolutely marvelous! Huge piece of history and really nice for quiet time.
A quaint corner of England. As beautiful as it is charming. The oldest, most complete Saxon church in England. Only a short hop from the weardale way walk. Local amenities are provided by the Saxon Inn pub, located opposite the church.
Excellent place to visit, full of history. Beautiful 6th century church, as the eldest in England, with Roman stones incorporated. Well worth a visit. The Guide was lovely, helpful and informative.
A classic olde worlde church. Keys are available to go inside. I didn’t enter, because I didn’t want to disturb the Sunday Service.
Beautiful little church, it's so cool that you can just grab the key from a hook outside nr 28!
