Story

You are warmly invited to visit the Cathedral – whether you wish to join us for worship, or are seeking some space for peace and quiet, or are interested in exploring the Cathedral’s treasures of monuments, ledger stones (we have one of the largest collections in Western Europe) and stained glass.

The Cathedral is open Sunday to Friday from 7.30am until 6.30pm, and on Saturdays and Bank Holidays from 8.30am until 4.00pm.

There is no charge for entry – although donations are requested (we suggest £5 per adult visitor).

Times of daily services are available on our website: http://stnicholascathedral.co.uk/events-and-services/. Occasionally we are closed for special events. This information can also be found on our website.

The Cathedral has disabled access and is a registered Safe Place.

As you enter the Cathedral through one of the doors under the Lantern Tower you will see the Welcome Desk. On this desk are various leaflets and booklets about the Cathedral, about events taking place here and about the Christian faith. These include a free Welcome leaflet which includes a suggested route to explore the Cathedral and some of its treasures.

The Cathedral’s Dog Leap Café is open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday and serves lunches, light bites, home-made cakes, teas and coffees.

An interesting Cathedral. We randomly turned up and the organist was practicing for a recital. Also a collection of photographs from a number of local camera clubs. Definitely worth a look. Very informative guides.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I have always found my visits to Newcastle Cathedral to be fascinating journeys that beautifully blend history, art, and tranquility. Each time I walked in, I was immediately embraced by a warm and welcoming atmosphere, finding peace and inspiration within its ancient walls. Capturing the beauty of the stained glass windows designed by William Wailes has been a particular delight. These windows, depicting scenes such as St. George slaying the dragon and John the Baptist's sermon, are true masterpieces that tell compelling stories through art. The cathedral's rich musical traditions, including its history of concerts and festivals, especially performances of Handel's "Messiah," contribute significantly to its heritage and attract both history buffs and music lovers alike. Each visit to this grand cathedral, a sanctuary of beauty and history, has reaffirmed its status as a central and captivating landmark in Newcastle.
Beautiful cathedral with intricate stained glass windows located next to Newcastle Castle. If you are planning to visit the castle, considering popping into this cathedral along the way. It’s free!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Newcastle Cathedral is truly a magnificent and intricately crafted piece of history. The architecture is stunning, and there are so many details inside that are worth exploring—it’s truly awe-inspiring. During my visits, the friendly staff members were more than willing to offer insightful explanations about the cathedral’s history and features, which made the experience even better. I enjoyed my time here so much that I visited twice, which is a testament to how much I liked the place. However, I want to share a personal experience. After my second visit, I began experiencing some strange occurrences. I had a series of nightmares and then suddenly fell ill. Perhaps it’s all just a coincidence, but I felt it might be worth mentioning, especially for those who are spiritually or physically sensitive, including young children or pregnant women. This is purely a friendly heads-up based on my personal experience, and I mean no harm by it. Despite this, I still appreciate the beauty and history of the cathedral and believe it’s a place worth visiting—just maybe with a bit of caution.

Visited with my wife and we are still in awe of how beautiful and intricate the cathedral is. We were lucky enough to listen to the choir practicing and it moved us to tears how magnificent and beautiful it sounded. Frida was a very informative and insightful guide.
Whenever I am passing through Newcastle, I make sure it will be a Thursday, has the cathedral as live music. This cathedral is outstanding that it allows Street people to use this building for shelter, where they can use the toilets and get a hot drink. It also supports ex prisoners, with help to return to them to ther families-in my view outstanding! On a Thursday they have a group of musicians playing Irish music, anyone can join in and play from 2:00 till 4. This cafe must have the best selections of cake in Newcastle, yesterday I had a BLT sandwich, a large slice of lemon drizzle, and a pot of tea it was just £8. On my way out, I met 'carol'a volunteer lay person, she was in the main part of a church giving spiritual support to anyone, So with the support to prisoners and the local Street people, live music and beautiful cake , what are cracking vibrant place this cathedral is, it is somewhere to take the pressure off life, get spiritual support and a slice of cake!
What really catches your eyes are the surviving stained glass windows. The perfection and bright colours are just stunning. I was lucky to visit when they were practicing the music on the organs. It does make your visit much more interesting. Inside you have a cafeteria and souvenir shop, worth stopping.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
