Good spot for a home cook meal while roaming around Yorkshire dales. Cheeses and milk are amazing !! Steak pie was well made. Beef Roast was over cooked....
I've been wanting to go here for years because I love cheese just as much as the next person. We travelled over an hour to get there and pre booked our table during the week for Sunday. It didn't start well, the lady couldn't find our reservation and made us feel like she was annoyed at us, another server had to come over and find it, we got seated with out backs to the rest of the restaurant, didn't get told about any specials, had to ask for clean cutlery and didn't get an apology for it being dirty in the first place. We ordered our food and drinks, our food came and then they decided to go make the blackcurrant squash my partner ordered but they only brought a half pint out rather than the pint he asked for. I was about 3/4 the through my meal when my coffee finally arrived, again with no apology for it being so late. I ordered the sausage and mash and it was a bit bland, nothing really special about it, however my partner did enjoy his Sunday roast. We had barely put our knives and forks down before they were taking the dishes away whilst asking if we were finished. We were asked if we wanted anything else but we could barely finish answering before the server said, just the bill then. The bill came much faster than our drinks however it was wrong, so had to get that corrected. From walking in the door of the restaurant to walking out was less than 40 mins, we felt rushed and like we were interrupting their day and being an inconvenience by being paying customers. If you're travelling to visit the cheese factory, I'd recommend going into Hawes to find something to eat and avoiding Calverts restaurant all together.
Had a Christmas Dinner here today and WOW!!!! Fantastic food. This was without doubt the best Christmas Dinner ever. I hate sprouts. But could happily eat sprouts cooked like these were every day. To be honest every single item on the plate was exceptional. The Christmas Dinner of Christmas Dinners.
Absolutely wonderful restaurant, we usually try to visit at least a few times each year even though it’s a bit of a distance to travel. We visited recently for a Christmas Lunch and were thoroughly delighted with the meal and service. The rarebit I chose as a starter was fantastic, the picked cabbage in particular was absolutely delicious. For mains we both had turkey which was excellent too, nice as it wasn’t dry at all which many restaurants seem to struggle with. The vegetables, stuffing and other trimmings were all top quality and very tasty so all in all we felt the meal was great value. The food however is just one of this restaurants qualities, it’s other outstanding features are it’s wonderful staff and the views over the North Yorkshire countryside. I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve visited Calvert’s over the years, it’s consistently excellent and I’ve never been disappointed any time I’ve visited. Needless to say we will be back again soon.
Quite easily the worst place I have ever "eaten." The food was unashamedly from packets. The "pie" was disgusting, served as a wedge, the "mince" had no structure and was closer to mashed up corned beef from a can, the crust could barely be called pastry and most likely it all was bought as something similar to a tesco value pie. The mash potato must have been from a rehydrated form as it was closer to the texture of a rubber ball than mash potato. Peas were tasteless and the red cabbage would be better put to use as an embalming fluid than on a plate in a "restaurant." When asked about the meal I replied it was horrible, and ultimately I still had to pay for it, although the price of two cups of tea was knocked off £3.90 as opposed to the £13 pounds charged for this absolute rubbish. Quite simply, save your money and go to one of the delightful looking pubs in the nearby towns, rather then spend your hard earned money here. If there were to be a good point, the staff were friendly, and it must be remembered that it is not their fault they are forced to serve such utter tripe.
Finally managed to get in here to eat, add 6 usually fully booked whenever visiting. Prices are reasonable - 3 courses for £16.95 weekdays or carvery Sunday. 3 course cheese lovers special is same price and great, battered weneydale starter, stuffed chicken, and a cheesecake to finish. Homemade lemonade also very good.
First time visiting since before lockdown and certainly won't be back, food was just warm not hot I had the mince pie which was very salty so didn't eat it the red cabbage was cold and the chips were crunchy as though they had been reheated and reheated but as we were there for 11.40 early for lunch I expected the food to be hot and fresh and it was neither the portion size of the pie was very small but certainly won't be be going back we have visited for year but certainly did not expect the standards to have dropped so much its a shame as its always been excellent in the past won't be back
