Had a great day out! Loads for the kids to do as part of the Summer of Play. House is genuinely fascinating and virtually unchanged for over 300 years. All the volunteers were very cheery and knowledgeable, you can tell they enjoy the house as well
Lovely place to walk away a few hours. Grounds are beautifully kept, there's plenty of cafes and toilets. An ideal place for dog walkers, with a few places you can let them off the lead. Will be visiting again.
Absolutely love it here. It's not too far from me. They have parking near the house or there's another smaller round carpark at the other entrance. The cafe has a great choice of food and drinks and they do ice creams. Loads of places to explore. There's also toilets there and a play area. There's always events on, especially during the school holidays. And they do the cinema nights in the summer.
A great National Trust property with a very long drive through pleasant parklands. The main house has been left is as it was left to the NT. There is a restaurant on site along with a separate cafe which is useful. It's worth walking through the tunnels there under the houses too to see where you come out. A short walk away is Calke church which is also worth a visit.
Very large grounds with loads of interesting walks, including 2 tunnels a walled garden a church, a fun trail for kids with riddles, as well as an interesting tour of the old house being preserved mostly as it was at the time NT took over with tons of artifacts and stories from the interesting guides. A large cafe plus a large cafe restaurant, the honey roasted swede soup with warm bread was great. Dog-friendliness: Dogs allowed everywhere except house on lead including inside cafes.
What a tranquil experience! A revitalizing journey through nature, with crisp, refreshing air, sunlight bathing the fields, the gentle sounds of flowing water, and the picturesque sight of the mansion and church, not to mention the deer and sheep. I'd gladly become a National Trust member just to revisit the Calke Abbey trails again and again. The staff has been incredibly friendly, the food delightful, and the quaint shop offers charming memorabilia. There's a delightful play area for children, and I've noticed numerous dogs enjoying the trails, albeit on leashes to ensure the safety of the livestock. There are also plenty of designated eating areas for visitors to enjoy.
This place is so unique! Staff there are extremely friendly and knowledgeable - I asked them so many questions about the property, history and the owners and they have been so patient! Place is family friendly and of course dog friendly! Hidden Gem just outside Derby! Highly recommend for a lovely day out :!
A fascinating place to visit. The house is probably better defined as preserved than restored, with much of it as it was at a point when it was being run down. It’s a house that is quite crammed with things as the family were Victorian hoarders and loved natural history. Although many of the rooms were a bit dishevelled there were a lot of them and plenty to see, which was good because often National Trust properties only seem to have a few rooms open. Quite fun for kids as there were tunnels to explore, one from house to stables and one in the grounds. The grounds were great to explore and there is a lovely walled kitchen garden that was a pleasure to wander round. The cafe was busy so we didn’t get chance to sample it, but my only criticism of National Trust is that standardisation across their catering feels like a rush to the bottom, with average food served at very high prices.
Great place to visit. Lots to see and massive grounds to stroll around. It's interesting to see a stately home that has not been refurbished as most have as it makes me feel better about the condition of my own, very much smaller, house. Edging through a herd of cows was an experience.
Lovely place for a walk. Dog friendly. Had to pay £7.50 per person for parking and gardens but if you want to see the house inside, you have to pay an additional £12.50.
