Went to Cafe Rouge for a birthday treat while using a Groupon voucher and enjoyed the experience. The service was good and staff were friendly. Enjoyed it...
Once upon a time this was a decent chain restaurant. However, it's now on its way down. Poor customer service, cheap ingredients and poor presentation. We talked to the manager who told us she was leaving soon... This restaurant is in a bad way and won't survive long.... it's just a bit sad and the company seems to have given up on this particular place on Gray Street. There are so many great places to eat in Newcastle, best give Cafè Rouge a miss
Nice decor. Comfortable seating. Service is quick enough for a lunch or quick dinner. Unfortunately, a list of a few problems; generally poor service little attention given to customers as staff talk 'shop' whilst front of house with waiting diners. Glassware not clean. Steaks asked for medium but cooked through with burned fat at the edges and a garnish of half dead peashoots to boot. No rib eyes or fillets available, so at least saved a few quid there. The overall experience and final bill is not compatible with a return visit.
Such a shame. Cold coffee, cold food and a wait of 45 minutes in a very quiet restaurant. When the food was returned, we were hoping for hot food but sadly it came back lukewarm again. After a very awkward conversation with the incredibly rude manager, they did take some of the food off the bill but her attitude was unacceptable. She was adamant that the restaurant was busy, as if that was an excuse for sub standard service and poor food quality. We won't be coming back.
This was our first visit to a Cafe Rouge and we arrived for our 7.45pm booking, were greeted and seated straight away. Then our lovely waiter, Adam, introduced himself and took our drinks order, even recommending his favourites on the mocktails which we tried. Our starter was served quicker than we expected, and was delicious. Adam then took our main meal order, even educating me on the fact that what I had always thought was 'blood' with rare steaks, is actually meat juices and such I really didn't know that!. We ordered the steak, the summer salad, and the pork sorry, I can't remember the fancy names of the dishes, and again these were served quicker than we expected in such a busy restaurant. The dishes were fabulous, and you get a lot more than you expect for the price. We even got a dessert because for only £3 it would be rude not to Throughout the night we were approached by Adam and another waitress to ask if anything else was required, but they don't approach so many times as to be a nuisance, it was nice to feel we could request more mocktails without waiting too long. All in all, it was a fantastic night, with fabulous, tasty food and very friendly staff. I would highly recommend anyone to visit, and we certainly will be going again.
This is a great disappointment as the food and service were under par. My previous experience with Cafe Rouge was in London and everything was of an excellent standard. I just can't say the same for this branch in Newcastle. The food does not look like they have been freshly cooked; I suspect most of the food are pre-prepared and were heated up on demand, hence it was very bland and definitely not worth the money that they are charging. Luckily I had a 50% off voucher, otherwise, I would have really kicked a fuss. The service was slow and the waitress didn't even know if our starters have been served??!! We had bouillabaisse that was luke warm how hard is it to heat something up from a microwave? and my confit de canard was soggy and oily. It is unacceptable that they can serve such poor standard of cooking. I suspect being a restaurant chain has something to do with this. Never again!
This is the third time I've been to Cafe Rouge this year, the food is good quality however the second and third times we suffered from items being removed from the menu which is pretty bad. They really need to get their supply chain sorted out so that punters do not have to choose alternatves. Secondly the staff seemed to be taking dishes to the wrong tables, but could be forgiven because it was busy. Lastly and most annoying, we hear that the tips given to the staff are only partially received, the company is reported to take approximately 50% of the tips and this is not only greedy but unacceptable. This is a foul practice which needs to stop. I would consider eating where staff get the full allocation of my money - I do not want to give Cafe Rouge management money that does not belong to them.
Brilliant atmosphere, and lovely food. Service was a little slow but, they were very busy. Waiting staff were excellent and very accommodating. Tried my first ever snail..... and last .
The chicken burger tastes extremely bad, even McDonald's can make a better burger than Cafe Rouge with a cheaper price. The food doesn't look exactly like the picture and i definitely won't go to there for a second time. The worst dining experience ever!
Came for valentines with my wife. Food was excellent, well cooked and actually pretty reasonable in price. The wine we got, a French pinot Noir, was amazing, but also £30. Service isn't amazing but it was pretty standard for a UK restaurant
