As in the winter is hard to decide where to go because of the unpredictable weather...this was another wee spot which was great for short walk.We walked all trails...which was taking around hour.loved peace and fresh air
This place has four short but pleasant walks through woodlands, along river banks and pastures. It also passes next to a river in several parts where it is possible to see birds such as Grey Wagtails and Dippers.nThe four walks are:n• Riverside Loop 80 metres.n• Sawmill Loop 60 metres.n• Hillside Trail 1000 metres.n• Beech Loop 120 metres.nAll these walks are all moderately difficult.nFinding the vehicle access route isn't easy because it isn't signposted. It is best approached from the large A29 Loughry roundabout at the southern end of Cookstown. From the roundabout drive a few hundred metres along the B520 Tullywiggan Road in the direction of Stewartstown. The entrance is on the lefthandside immediately before a brick wall. The capark, which accommodates around ten vehicles, is at about 500 metres from the access point. This gravel path is narrow and commonsense needs to be used when looking out for cars coming in the opposite direction. The gravel drive has now been repaired, thankfully.nThere are a couple of information boards dotted around the woods but no waymarks.nThere are no toilets here either.nA couple of picnic benches and bins are also dotted around.nWe didn't see any litter, which was refreshing, but as usual, a few irresponsible dog walkers had dumped dog waste bags at the side of the paths.nOverall, this is a nice place to visit if you either live locally or are visiting the area.
Called here when we visited the Tullyhogue Fort down the road from here. Has a nice path along the river for a lovely quiet walk amongst the trees. You can see killymoon Castle across the river. The walk itself is not sign posted at all, as it took us a short time to find it. The lane up to it is very bumpy, and the carpark would have about ten car parking spaces. We only seen one bin just at the entrance to the walk. Great place to bring your dog. There are no toilet facilities at all.
Beautiful deciduous wood and river trail on the edge of Cookstown. It's located just off the large roundabout for Stewartstown, on the B520 Tullywiggan Road. As soon as you exit the roundabout, there is a turn into a lane on the left. The turn is just before a high sandstone wall and a bus stop. The short, potholed lane leads to a carpark and the start of the trail. There are four trails and loops that follow the Ballinderry river and Killymoon river. Some of the walk is through woods, some on high, open ground that has lovely views of Killymoon castle, Cookstown , the rivers and countryside. The whole walk will take about an hour.
This isnt a big wood but it is a special place. A Woodland Trust managed site, it is well laid out and signage is improving. It runs down onto the River and has views of Killymoon Castle. A simple, easy walk you could easily spend a couple of hours here.
