Cannot recommend highly enough , booked a tour of the house , which was given by the owners son , very down to earth , funny & informative, allowed to take photos , bumped into the farther & mother in the garden who again were very lovely, no air or graces, beautiful house & grounds , cafe staff were also very pleasant. Well worth a visit
Wonderful place. It's unchanged structurally since the late sixteenth century and dates back in part to the 1300s. Beautiful and atmospheric. Lots of historical interest. Most and gatehouse. Good teashop and gift shop. What I liked most was that it is a real family home still. No roped off areas, few explanatory signs but great, helpful, knowledgeable guides. You get the sense that when the visitors and the guides have left the owners will just step back in with no changes made. I would have liked to know more about the current Lord Saye and Sele who seems to be a remarkable character.
Great location with beautiful fields surrounding. The tour guide took us to the roof top terrace where we could see our all the land and it was spectacular.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
A little gem nearby Oxford that's worth a half day trip. More a fortified grand mansion than a castle with battlements and turrets, it nevertheless has the essential moat and a distinguished history dating back to the Magna Carta where the first Lord was a signatory of the historical deed. There are lovely rooms manned by knowledgeable stewards and a roof top view of the surrounding countryside, which if you are fortunate, may have the Lord of the castle himself providing the tour narrative. If you're lucky, you could be there when the rose garden is in full bloom.
Staff are lovely and professional. The castle is well maintained and very cleaned. Have a lovely time exploring the castle which a history that should be proud of. Great time and nice ambiance of the castle.
My first visit to this the castle a few years ago it wasn't open, hence this return visit. This place is a must see , great grounds , great castle and moat. Historic house members get in free and entry when I visited was only on a Sunday and Wednesday 2pm-5pm check before visiting. There are plenty of rooms to look at and there are knowledgeable volunteers in each room along with information booklets. You also get access to the roof which gives you wonderful views across the moat , grounds and countryside. There is a cafe and shop seperate to the castle . The only toilets on site are in the car park so use before you go in. Do check out the church as it has some wonderful tombs and wall art. Highly recommended
Had a lovely day in Broughton Castle. The major house is simply stunning and so much to see. There is only a small garden so best to get ticket for the house too. I loved the area around the house. The house itself has an amazing atmosphere. A lot of history and fantastic display of the swards. The owners often walk around the grounds and very happy to share a story or two with curious guests. When we visited previously we were wble to go onto the roof of the castle, however this time the roof was closed. Such a shame, I remember the views were fantastic from up there
We did a tour of Broughton Castle organised by Historic Houses. We met the owner and had a wonderful tour. Broughton Castle is a moated and fortified manor house near Banbury in North Oxfordshire. Set in parkland and built of the rich local Hornton ironstone, it was selected by Simon Jenkins as one of only twenty to be awarded five stars in his book England's Thousand Best Houses.
It's a great place to visit. So much history. 5 stsrsVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
