I went to the BFI for quick meeting, having not gone there for many years. I loved the refurb which looked fresh, contemporary and inviting. We met in the bar area with drink brought from cafe area. Good spot for working as not too loud. We didn’t watch a film or use the Mediatheque but I’ve watched old movies there in the past. Like the look of the Library, the shop and lobby area. Lots of seating and tables and there is disability access and a full restaurant on the Riverside! It wasn’t possible to use the BFI WiFi but we got access to the National Theatre WiFi.
LAIKA: Frame x Frame, a free exhibition at BFI Southbank, is a fantastic treat for anyone who loves animated movies, especially those made by LAIKA, the studio behind *Coraline*, *ParaNorman*, and *Kubo and the Two Strings*. The exhibition is all about showing how these amazing films were made. When you walk in, you’ll see the actual puppets, sets, and props used in LAIKA’s movies. The level of detail is incredible—things like Coraline’s tiny coat or Kubo’s origami figures are so carefully made that it’s hard not to be amazed. The exhibition is easy to navigate, with lots of interesting facts and videos that explain how stop-motion animation works. You’ll get to see how the artists move the puppets just a little bit for each frame to make them come to life on screen. It really makes you appreciate the hard work that goes into these films. There are also some fun interactive parts where you can try your hand at animating, which is great for both kids and adults. Though the exhibition isn’t huge, it’s packed with cool stuff, so you can easily spend an hour or more exploring. Overall, LAIKA: Frame x Frame is a must-see if you’re into animation or just looking for something different to do. It’s free, fun, and gives you a peek behind the scenes of some truly magical movies.
Went as a wheelchair user, unfortunately the main lift was out of order. So my son had to carry my chair up and down the stairs. We went to see the coralline exhibition which we enjoyed.
I walked in, saw that they had the entrance to the cinema and also a restaurant and bar to the side. Inside the cinema entrance was the BFI library which is a small one but looks good. Staffs were helpful even though they could not answer my questions fully. The environment looks relaxed and it appears everyone is willing to help when asked. They have about 4-5 cinema spaces, 1 upstairs, maybe 3 on the office level and 1 of them is the biggest size, they also have hospitality hires available like bars, cafe etc
Its film programing is top drawer in this gift of a venue for the film fans. All the screens are good and ticket prices not hard on the wallet. The South Bank location is well appointed with its Thameside views are a welcome.. Drinks are a bit over priced but that's 2024 for you.
Came to see the Laika exhibition. Really enjoyed checking out the displays
Attended this venture for a Netflix preview screening and the place felt luxurious and the staff were great! The screen itself was clean and very well kept with extremely good quality! Had a really great time and will certainly return sometime soon
Visited this place while trying to kill some time between attractions. Managed to get a table of 5 straight away at around 3pm on a Thursday. Funky restaurant/bar joined onto the cinema. Had some chips and pizza. Service was quick! Made the pizza greasy as watched them do it. Food was nice. Ok price for the location. Place was pretty clean. Visited the toilets which where ok….. Great location and imagine quite funky at night.
I went to the small cinema studio which has roughly 35-40 seats. Saw Past Lives which was phenomenal. I felt like I was eavesdropping to Celine Song’s Director life throughout the movie. I think this movie will win an Academy and a BAFTA. One reminiscent thing though about the cinema, there is this certain smell to it which reminded me of how old-ish cinemas back home smell. It is not very unpleasant but it also is not pleasant but I think is a very common smell of cinemas. Haha. I can’t exactly point it out but that is what it reminded me of.
So, I dropped by BFI Southbank recently, expecting a chill evening soaking up some artsy vibes. But then, there’s the bar... iNSIDE ONE. Oh boy, the bar. Ever felt like you’re invisible? Well, the bar staff here has a spooky talent for making you feel just that. Tried to catch an employee’s eye and ended up in a staring contest with the back of their head. When they finally noticed us, it was like we’d asked them to explain the meaning of life, not just for a couple of drinks. It was weirdly thrilling, in a ‘will-they-won’t-they-notice-us’ kind of way. Made me a bit nostalgic for the thrill of being picked last in gym class. Not. So, if you’re hitting up BFI Southbank for a movie or to check out their latest event which, fairness, are always pretty epic, maybe brace yourself for the bar saga. It’s like they’re hosting a masterclass in the art of ignoring. Adds a whole new layer of suspense to the evening, I suppose. Ah, BFI Southbank, you’re a puzzling but somehow still endearing enigma.
