Bishop's and Earl's Palaces
"Last entry 4.30pm. Step inside the spectacular ruins of a remarkable residence at the heart of Kirkwall. The medieval Bishop's Palace was built in the 1100s at about the time as St Magnus Cathedral. In the early 1600s the Bishop's Palace was incorporated into a refined Renaissance palace commissioned by Earl Patrick Stewart, one of Orkney's most notorious rulers. The Earl's Palace was reputedly built using slave labour."

If you have Historic Scotland membership which grants entry to hundreds of sites around Scotland then worth it, otherwise just ruinous buildings of historic significance. Bishops Palace from 1100s, built the same time as the Cathedral, and the Earls Palace for Patrick Stuart in the 1500s. Ideal Instagram photo opp or for wedding or graduation photos
Enchanting place full of medieval history
This was our first historical stop on Orkney. We were able to pick up or Discovery Pass here. The person that was working at the ticket office was exceptionally helpful and gave us the full run down on his recommendations for the short two days that we would be on Orkney. The castles themselves were interesting because we were able to explore all of it - no ropes or “no-go” zones - the entire place is open for exploration. We spent about an hour here. Very much recommend a visit!
The buildings are very interesting, but it was closed when i got there. You can view them from outside but i would have enjoyed to go inside and have a look around. Be aware of the season and the open times, and phone ahead.
Very atmospheric, and a must for any history buff. Very central in Kirkwall, and plenty of eateries close by. Definitely worth a visit, just across from St Magnus Cathedral. Visited in October so it wasn't open to go round, but still very much worth seeing and info boards are still accessible.
Well restored and preserved Earl's palace in centre of Kirkwall belonging to Patrick Stewart dating back to 1550s. Building mostly in tact with some good interprative signs guiding you through the rooms. Next to it is the Palace of William the Old, Bishop of Orkney, built around the same time. Here you can go up the tower with great views over Kirkwall and St Magnus Church. Adult £6/£4.80 concession, child £3.60.
Well signposted and welcoming to those who like to explore. Need to be careful walking around as ground may be uneven.
The palace ruins are fantastic. Unfortunately, the staff who work here do not have a great attitude. They made up 4 or 5 excuses to not open the tower. It was the last day of the season and they just couldn't be bothered.
Amazing. Well worth a visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
