Excellent seafood haunt with French influence. The mussels were juicy and the white wine cream sauce rich. Good selection on the menu and prices for lunch. Short walk from the seafront. Cosy atmosphere. Reasonably priced for the portion and quality of cooking.Food: 5/5
One of the best meals we've had in Whitstable. This little place is full of charm, the simplicity of a French bistro and uncomplicated dishes packed with flavour. This is not fancy food for fancy sake, this is beautifully crafted, wholesome dishes, with attention to taste. We ordered two starters mussels & scallops, bread, olives and the beef wellington to share between two of us and it was plenty along with the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The wine was fantastic, and reasonably priced, but we did find the selection of spirits available to be somewhat basic and lacking the curated attention that could have complimented the overall experience better. Regardless, I will be back time and time again. No dogs unfortunately
The staff are really friendly and professional, no complaints about the service. Luckily we were sat outside as the restaurant itself was boiling hot even with the fans going full blast. The food was ok although with such a small menu I was hoping it would be better. The monkfish I ordered was battered but it was soggy not crisp as I would have expected. The bill was over £125 for two people, including a bottle of wine. For that kind of price I was hoping for a bit more skill from the kitchen.
The service was warm and the setting was relaxed. We took advantage of the reasonably priced set menu. Whilst the food was not overly amazing, it was well cooked and presented - if I had to describe it I would call it comfort food.
Mussels and oysters lovely and fresh. Dish of the day mackeral excellent, as was the steak. Also great sweets. Nice surroundings, good service and reasonably priced. Would definitely return.
Save the best til last! We ended our trip to Whistable with a meal at Birdies and it was really lovely. Probably our favourite meal in Whistable throughout our stay - though also the most expensive! We got the seafood asiette, monkfish, half a dozen oysters, cherry cheesecake and chocolate truffle torte. All were amazing, and the atmosphere was very nice. We were sat right by the door on a small table for two that felt like had been squeezed in though so it felt a little odd. Otherwise great place. They're very busy and we did have to book as they were packed out the day before. Booking over the phone at lunchtime for dinner was super easy, the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Especially the lovely young woman with reddish hair and glasses that served us, we didn’t catch her name. Full of great banter, as was the gentleman that took our order. Would gladly come back.
After a disappointing night out at the Seafood Shack we booked two dinners here during our stay in Whitstable. It's a smaller place, so better book ahead. It's a very nice, charming restaurant. A bit of Brasserie/Bistro style. Feels very warm and welcoming. Owner and staff were wonderful folks. Friendly, helpful and welcoming. Our Bulldog was welcome here as well. First night we've had the baked oysters Rockefeller Style and goats cheese salad. Both wonderful dishes. Fresh and tasty oysters, creamy flavourful goat cheese. For the mains we ordered mussels & shrimps and Beef Wellington with sides veggies and potatoes. A bottle of wine with that. Both shrimp and mussels very fresh again and of high quality. The Beef Wellington was a real treat. Amazingly done! Kudos to the cook! A creme brulée for dessert. A really great dinner for a fair price. Happily we came back to other day and had another wonderful dining experience. Raw oysters and Terrine for starters. Both fantastic, they got great oysters here. Tasted a lot better than the ones at the Seafood Shack. Terrine was my thing...really like it. For the mains a chowder and shrimps...and another Beef Wellington. Beef was a great as the other night. Beautiful. Chowder was nice and creamy and the shrimps another winner. A winner was also the wine: Villa Des Croix. Nice, fresh, crisp. This is really a fantastic restaurant. Great food quality, wonderful staff and owner. A cook who knows what he's doing. Highly recommended.
The oysters and mussels were delicious, really tasty, a pity we only had the table for 1.5 hours so we couldn't keep them coming . The crab bisque wasn't as flavoursome as the other two courses but it was ok. The atmosphere was cozy and warm.
Fabulous dinner at Birdies, first time we have visited. The food was beautifully cooked, really tasty and the staff were very welcoming and friendly.
What a great place. Fresh oysters, great fish. Beef Wellington was surprisingly great. Didn't stay for desserts but seemed like a good selection. Will try to come back.
