Lovely day out, filled with really interesting places to visit, gorgeous views and a lot of history.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
Beautiful place for a walk! Very popular with dog walkers. You can walk up to the windmill and then continue on, passing the observatory and lighthouse no longer in use and from there see some spectacular views of the Liverpool skyline. Well worth a visit. Plenty of benches to stop and have a rest along the way. Also a great place for a picnic!
Nice little walk, relatively easy trails to follow but slopes can be a little tricky in places so not the best if you have mobility issues. Plenty of benches around the windmill and more a little closer to the observatory, clear views of the Liverpool skyline & landmarks. Well worth a visit
It is going to be one of the reviews I won’t attached a picture due to watching the uneven stone road surface with lots of potential hazards for little kids and water ponds where they get shoes wet. During my walking after a school day there were two little ones tripped over. Personally I enjoy the place a lot and would recommend adults for hiking. If you take little one like me do please pay extra attention not only to the stone road surface but also the plants with spike leaves. There is a lovely farm near the entrance where you can take little one to see various animals like goat, chicken, pig etc and there is a small playing area as well. If you feel like to you can make donation as the farm is run by volunteers I have been told so.
Bidston Windmill stands proudly atop Bidston Hill, offering breathtaking views of the Mersey River and Liverpool. The ascent to the summit is well worth the effort, and sturdy footwear is recommended, especially on wet days when the ground can become muddy. Bidston Hill is a popular spot for dog walkers, and its seclusion makes it a haven for local wildlife. Unfortunately, as with many natural areas near urban centers, vandalism is a concern, particularly during the summer months when bushfires pose a threat. Immerse yourself in the rich history of Bidston Hill, where an ancient Viking sun god's location is said to have been, the Normandy D-Day tides were calculated at the maritime observatory, and the day of invasion was determined. And don't miss the opportunity to explore the Bidston Windmill, which opens to visitors on select dates. Consulte with the local council for current opening hours and arrangements.
The Windmill is open one day a month over the summer period. The time table can be found on the door. I went in a few years ago and it's great to say I've been inside. It's no longer functioning but it's full of history. Unfortunately wheelchair access would be a problem to get to the windmill. Various ways to get to the windmill, all walkable up and down hill.
If you're visiting Bidston Hill, it's well worth making it up to the top to see this, the observatory, the little old lighthouse, and if you're able to spot them nearby, the ancient rock carvings, too! You'll also get an interesting view of both Liverpool and Birkenhead in one direction, and sea in the other direction, at a point around half way between the windmill and the lighthouse. There's tons of parking available for the hill, most of which will leave you right next to the Tam O'Shanter farm too, which you might want to visit if anyone you're with would enjoy a petting zoo!
A beautiful windmill set in a stunning location surrounded by woodland and heath with views of The River Mersey and Liverpool. Popular with dog walkers, its a favourite spot for me.
Great building, great views over Liverpool Bay. If you look at the ground near the mill, you will see a large 'X' in the rock, now filled with earth and grass. This is the footprint of the medieval Post mill that preceded the stone one. Look a bit further and you will see shallow marks in the rock where its guide post was set.
A corn tower mill situated on the Wirral Peninsula. You can't go inside but it is in Bidston Nature Reserve. There has been a windmill on this site since 1596, a wooden peg mill was destroyed by fire in 1791, with the current mill built around 1800. It was a working flour mill until circa 1875. Badly damaged again in 1927 and in 2006 its roof was replaced. Very photogenic, as are most mills.
