On a nice day it’s a pleasant walk around the walls and a peaceful retreat. There’s a small amount of signage around explaining the history but otherwise climb the stairs to the top of the mound and enjoy the view! No doubt due to the pandemic, the cottage was shut when I visited and there’s no other facilities, but that helps to keep it authentic and reminds you of the history more. Being so conveniently located right outside the train station means it’d be a shame not to pay a visit and the free entrance is brilliant.
This was obviously once a beautiful place dating back to William the conqueror 1066 , there is not much of it left but the history of the site is fascinating. There is no toilet or food available but it is very tranquil with lots of green space a lovely place to take your children or dogs for a walk . Also it was quite noisy as it was right next to an extremely busy railway line . And parking was limited but it is a free English heritage site and well worth a visit for the history of it .
Not much left to this castle. In a historical context it is fascinating, but what's left of it?...hmmmmm. As for practicalities, although there was one parking spot available one only needs one I guess!, the road spaces along the railway line were fully taken. This was a weekday, so looks like commuters to me. Also the main line trains whistle past every few minutes or so, which sadly takes a lot of the "wow" out of this site..couldn't see any toilets or food...so, on balance, glad we went, but once is enough for me, especially since I don't live close by. The town, however, looks fascinating, but sadly we didn't have time to visit.
As a sightseeing place, this ruin is lovely. Walk around the moat & then come to the middle to read about the history of the castle. Bring a picnic, bring a ball to play. A few benches to sit on or bring your blanket. Went on Bank Holiday Friday, wasn’t to busy. We parked in the Berhhamsted station, it was £6, you can stay 6 hours, not that you will need it. We spend around 90 minutes at the castle, kids played etc. As lovely the place is there are no toilets sadly. Or no refreshments, bring your own. If you cross from the castle under the bridge, there is a little play area for kids or you can walk along the canal. Overall a nice trip for a nice day. The castle is free, you can give a voluntary contribution if you want to, but no pressure. Great for a short family day out.
This was my second time to Berkhamsted Castle and it was just as enjoyable as the first time. This is a great historical site that also has some great views. Once you've seen the ruins and walked the perimeter it is also worth taking a stroll through Berkhamsted itself. It's a great little village with a nice market once a month and the walk along the Grand Union Canal is perfect.
A stone's throw from the Station and High Street, this is a nice place to come and sit. Not much left to see but the earth works still give a great impression of scale. A number of information boards outline the history of the site. Don't expect parking or facilities. There is a multistorey car park a short walk away on the other side of the railway.
A free entry to the grounds of this infamous castle that stands in ruins. It was great to walk around the moat and discover a bit of its history, which I didn't know anything about it. It has taken us one hour yo walk around and climb the mound.
Great place to visit, close to Berkhamstead station. Area is well looked after and a nice place to walk, get some fresh air. Very close to the town which has plenty of bars, restaurants and pubs to go after a walk.
An interesting motte and Bailey castle in Berkhamsted, with a free entrance! It might not be very well preserved, but the site provides lots of information about the Norman history of the castle and the town in general. I recommend visiting here if you’re into history and looking for something to do in Berkhamsted.
We found this ancient English Heritage site, almost by accident, whilst walking the Grand Union Canal. Free entry with a number of strategically placed information boards. Well worth the short detour. Now the moan: Signage requests that visitors do NOT climb on the walls. This was blatantly ignored both by adults and children alike! It was also very disappointing to see two dog walkers let their dog off its lead only for it to dive into the moat with the ducks! If, as this incident showed, your dog doesn't respond to recall, why let it run free among the wildlife?? Please read and respect the 'rules' and protect our sites for future visitors. Thank you
