Absolutely well worth the visit. The hall itself is so good to walk round, especially with all the information boards around. Really helps you picture what it would have been like in all it's glory. The grounds and quarry garden is absolutely breathtaking so much to see and definitely worth the price.
Regular visitor to Belsay Hall & Castle .. It's always a pleasure to visit. Ample parking, pleasant, friendly, and helpful staff. The hall is a lovely walk into history exploring the well-preserved and renovated rooms and cellars. The walk to the castle is beautiful through the wonderful gardens and paths cut through a man made canyon. It's quite breathtaking when the fauna is in full bloom. The castle itself is stunning and a spiral staircase that may be a bit of a challenge to some leads up to the small roof, which in turn offers up some beautiful views. There's a newly built children's play area which is well set out for younger kids and there's seating areas too next to a cafe, which I haven't tried but it looked nice. I've been visiting here for years and will probably continue to do so. Dogs welcome but not inside the hall.
It is a wonderful place to spend a day and children will enjoy for sure. It is one of the English heritage sites that I would like to come again. It consists of Belsay hall, wonderful gardens and the Belsay castle. The quarry gardens are a unique experience and must go through it to see the castle. Felt like walking in a different world. One can climb the castle using the spiral steps and enjoy the view from the top. There is a park near the castle. I would return here for sure. The visit and the walk won't disappoint you.
What an amazing day out walking the gardens. Just such a relaxing walk. They are pet friendly so even "the queen" enjoyed the outing. Plenty of places to sit and rest and just take in the amazing sights. Restaurants does serve food & drink and ice cream ona. hot day :
We always have a brilliant time at Belsay. There is often something on such as knights tournaments, falconry, trails, etc. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. It's brilliant to see they now do tramper hire, however it is limited to 2.5 hours. I will need to experiment and attend without the girls to see if it will be enough time for them to have a good play in the park I think!
Booking online is easy and does say a few pounds. Very sad that the Cafe at the start next to the entrance and near the Hall, was shut the day we went, with no reason given - it really messed up our planned day. The Cafe at the other end, near the Castle, was open but is expensive, it was also too warm inside the day we went and only had a handful of tables outside. Maybe take a picnic with you and sit on the grass by the Castle or kids play area. There was also an ice cream van there. Both the Hall and the Castle are empty, in case you imagined they were like a National Trust place and filled with furniture etc. The Castle is a ruin. Both buildings are well worth looking around but didn’t take a lot of time. There are some lovely flower beds and a good array of different plants, especially when including those in the Quarry Garden. Our main reason for visiting was the Quarry Garden and it didn’t disappoint. It was cool, peaceful and by returning on the other less used pathway, we found a secluded bench on which to sit and eat our sandwiches from the Cafe. It is a great place for a gentle meander both through history & unusual gardens.
To say I'm Northumberland born I've never been before, took the wife and we weren't disappointed, the setting, the location the things to see were worth it. The staff were also very passionate from the till staff to the people in costume who were very charismatic about their jobs. It was a wonderful day outVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Absolutely stunning quarry gardens. A beautiful stroll through some gorgeous shrubbery. The kids playground is also top notch. We’re English Heritage members so tend to scope out the places to get the most out of our membership but may be expensive otherwise. An impressive building however felt they could have made better use with the use of open space. Maybe more of a nod towards the history of the area. Overall a great visit with the kids and definitely recommend.

Think of this as a pair of houses, one Georgian, one medieval, connected by the most wonderful quarry garden. There's also formal gardens by the Georgian Manor and a lovely forest walk by a lake as well. The pheasants roam free across the property. The medieval building is a ruin, but enough has been reconstructed to put an innovative animation it should get an award to tell the story of the Middleton family and buildings. You can also climb the keep for a nice view. Even the Georgian mansion, with very simple brutal? architecture is pretty much stripped down inside to save it from dry rot. They use it for art exhibitions which is a nice idea. But for me the highlight was the quarry garden. Quite different and would be fantastic on a hit day. There are two nice cafes, one for each set of buildings.
