Stumbled in by chance for lunch on Friday. Jade the waitress is an asset to this pub, she was very friendly and patient, she talked me through the meals. As I'm so fussy about my food and the quality and price, because I cook lovely meals myself at home so it's hard to pay for something that might not be upto my standart. The food was lovely and fresh, I was very happy and impressed, this is a massive compliment coming from me :- I've already recommended you to others. Keep up the good work.
Probably the best pub in Appledore. The Beaver Inn is a small traditional pub with an amazing atmosphere and mouth watering menu. We are renowned for our fantastic fish specials and for the friendly service that we offer. Enjoy watching local talent? The Beaver Inn plays live local up-beat music every Saturday, we host the Marmalade Club which is essentially an open mic night every Sunday and on Mondays we host local acoustic artists and one Monday a month we host North Devon Jazz Club. There is always something fun and exciting happening at The Beaver Inn! The Beaver Inn has been in existence for over 400 years serving the local fishing community and tradesmen from the new world America. Many people ask us how we got our name “The Beaver Inn”, as the pub is so old it is hard to say exactly where the name came from but we do know that The Beaver Inn is where the Press Gang used to gather sailors that they were pressing into the King’s service. The Press Gang wore beaver pelt hats so the pub soon became known as the place of the beavers. It is well known that Appledore and Bideford used to be massive trading ports where goods would be traded with the new world America. These goods included ceramics, tobacco and also beaver pelts so it is likely that the name for our pub, The Beaver Inn, also derived from this. When a Captain brought a ship back from the new world, there was a big problem with crewing for the return journey as they feared that if the crew were to go into Bideford they would never be seen again. Consequently, the Captain would offload his crew at The Beaver Inn and the women of Irsha Street would bring their home-brewed beer and entertain the men whilst the Captain and a skeleton crew would sail down to Bideford and carry out their trades before returning to Appledore to pick up their crew for their return journey.
Lovely spot right on the estuary with great outside space and cosy inside space for when the weather comes in. Dog friendly, nice little touches like dog towels by the front entrance. Lovely staff, great food. I had the best fish and chips I have had in years. We are not local but always visit if we are in the area. I would highly recommend a visit.
This became our little go to bar over our long weekend. Lovely service and we were lucky with the weather so managed to sit out the back and enjoy the views unfortunately they were doing some maintenance on the decking so it was a bit noisy, but I realise its a job that needs to be done. We also ate here on one evening which we booked. The food was lovely, I can definitely recommend the fish pie. Just a great place, definitely recommend
Group of friends visiting the village and we luckily were able to book a table. Lovely seafood pub meals with excellent range of fish dishes on offer. We all loved the seafood platter, everything was so fresh and well cooked. Excellent bread to soak up things. My fish pie was up there with some of the best I've had with a lovely cheese topping. The service was friendly and attentive, with some young staff, even though didn't look experienced, knew the ropes and did their best. Great atmosphere too.
Were sad to only be able to recently book a meal as long as we arrived at 6:00, especially as it was a birthday celebration, when at 7:00 the restaurant still looked like this. I can appreciate that perhaps staffing restrictions or what ever else may cause them to want to heard everyone into a shorter dining period, but it seems that to have so many unfilled tables when the demand is there, and restrict the later dining times, is a little mean, especially when its a time when locals could hope for easier access to available dining spaces. The food was ok, but the experience was soured.
Great view, good range of drinks at a reasonable price. Fairly varied food menu. Dog friendly.
Absolutely brilliant place to eat. Wonderful food, excellent staff. So friendly and welcoming, very accommodating and helpful. Would highly recommend.
