Balvenie Castle
"Defended by a magnificent curtain wall and iron yet, Balvenie was a stronghold of the powerful Black Comyns, rivals to Robert the Bruce in the early 1300s. It ultimately became the Renaissance residence of the Earls of Atholl, who built the Atholl Lodging with its grand circular tower."

Beautiful castle but it's only open during summer time. You can see the Highland cows near by field if you like to see.
Unfortunately the castle was closed for structural safety work when I went but the engineer from Historic Scotland was helpful enough to guide me to areas where I could see the structure without getting in the way or compromising safety. I'll give it another look when I'm next in the area as the images on google suggest its worth a wander round when it's fully open.
We visited the castle after touring the nearby Glenfiddich distillery highly recommended!. We had the entire place to ourselves and wandered freely around the interior. Much of what's left above ground level is accessible by spiral staircases which are safe and equipped with thick rope to haul oneself up and steady the descent. I'm 74 and managed OK. It's a small but very interesting site; the guide book adds much to one's understanding. Well worth the entry fee.
The castle that the famous whisky gets its name from, just a 10 minute walk from the distillery - there is a small fee to enter which is more than worth the contribution to conservation and it’s a nice bit of history in the middle of The Dufftown area.
Very disappointed of the customer service. We arrived at Balvenie Castle close to 5 PM. The Castle was opened until 5:30 PM. I wanted to buy a magnet and some postcards when we were done visiting the Castle. We finished the visit after 15 min, so at 5:15 we went to buy the stuff we wanted and the lady working there refused to sell us the stuff. The motive was that she closed the shop at 5 PM and we should have done our shopping before our visit at the Castle. I would have done that if she would’ve told me that she is closing the till at 5. The Castle is worth the visit though!
Giving only a 4 star rating at present as its closed and will update accordingly when I do get in. However from the outside Balvenie Castle is still pretty impressive
I like drinking the Balvenie whiskey so going to the Castle is a great experience, it's a few minutes walk from the Gelnfiddich distillery's parking
The castle was not open for visiting, but still so worth a visit. I love the highland cattle there, so cute
This is my partial review of the castle. Being a big balvenie whisky lover that I'm, I was thrilled to learn that there is actually a balvenie castle! So after visiting the distillery I figure we should go see the castle and learn about the true story of the name balvenie. This castle is nothing fancy, it was built in the 12th century by the Comyn family. The castle wall definitely have withstood the test of time. Despite being closed to 700 years old its still mainly intact. Sadly that can't be said for the interior, but in 700 years there would be nothing left of me, so I can't fault it too much. Lol... Overall, this is a simple castle, but visiting it after our balvenie tour perfectly rounded out the balvenie story!
One of my favourite castles that we visited. It was easy to sit in the quiet courtyard and imagine what things msy have been like back in the day. There werent many patrons the day I visited so it was easy to relax and take it all in. Only thing that would have made this perfect could be to have a coffee bar or tea house in the visitor center so that patrons could enjoy the facility.
