Didn't stay in the hotel but did use the Badger Bar for an evening meal on a Sunday evening. The bar itself was a little crowded so we were shown to the hotel restaurant. It was so atmospheric! Very old, with a wonderful array of furniture, an wood fired burner, an amazingly ornate radiator, lovely big chunky tables, sofas, old pictures. The food and service were wonderful and the roast chicken I had was seriously delicious. It was wonderfully moist and flavoursome. Good portion, giant Yorkshire pud, and a lovely pudding. The staff worked so hard and were super. Really enjoyed the few hours we spent there and can highly recommend!
Only reason haven't given this place 5 stars is because I didn't stay in the hotel. But loved The Badger Bar and they really do feed wild badgers. Place is over 400 yrs old so has plenty of character. Very good range of beers. Staff were very friendly and helpful even though they were short staffed at the time. Not a huge menu but starters, light bites, main meals etc. Even though only 2 staff on at a busy time, the food was excellent and homemade. There's an area to sit outside the front door, but also a nice area the other side of the building. There is a disabled entrance and dogs are welcome. Xx
Decent all round. The food was mostly great, good portion size and a fair price. I ordered the roast beef dinner, the gravy was definitely a highlight along with the huge Yorkshire pudding. Unfortunately the beef was more like leather. It felt like it had been carved then reheated. The potatoes were also a not to my preference but perfectly edible. The cauliflower cheese and other veggies were tip top. The service was also excellent and the place was clean with a lovely old charm about it.
This really is a great 3 star hotel. It's a mile outside Ambleside, so it is easily walkable... or you can jump on a bus. Great pint of stout as well.. so much so we just stayed in the Badger Bar all day... Food, although a bit pricey was fantastic.. full English breakfast was great as well. Great staff and service, and the room we were in was clean and comfortable .It's a good spot to base yourselves to do some walking from as well..we are definitely going to return later in the year.
Had a fabulous stay. We were met by Wendy who was lovely, so welcoming and helpful. We were quite late arriving so after we had dropped our bags we nipped out for food. Wendy advised us where to go and when we came back offered us cutlery and condiments and we took a drink to our room. Popped down afterwards to the bar before closing for a nightcap. Great night's sleep and upon waking we opened the patio doors onto a beautiful outdoor area, where the sun shone right into the room. Amazing breakfast, we can't wait to stay again. Thanks xxx
Great pint of stout. Also enjoyed the special of the day pie which was steak and ale. Was so good I visited again a few days later and had the same pie again. Homely atmosphere and delicious food.
I must have driven past this dozens of times but glad I finally got to visit. Dog friendly and a perfect location for lunch after visiting Rydale Caves. Food was very good with a fab selection of gluten free food too, including burgers. Lovely proper pub feel with lots of quirky elements like the ladies toilet being built round part if a rock face.
Really enjoy staying at the Glen Rothay, it's our third visit. The location is perfect if you're looking for somewhere quieter in the lakes. This was the first time we have stayed in the main building as we normally stay in the cottage and I prefer the cottage, but would visit again. Our hotel room had an incredibly loud boiler right outside!!! Other than that a lovely stay again, exceptional staff and food as always.
Great place - we stayed for a couple of nights with our dog. They have 4 designated dog friendly rooms in a building close to the hotel/pub, our room was Otter room 11 very large room with new bathroom, with a door to the outside - ideal for the dog! - 50 metres from pub. The pub/hotel is very old but quirky inside - great selection of beer and no complaints with food we had dinner both nights, breakfast very good as well we could always eat with our dog. Staff were brilliant. The place is about 1 mile from Ambleside & 2 miles from Grasmere you can walk or catch a bus to either. Great walks on your doorstop - Coffin trail, Rydal cave, walk around both Rydal & Grasmere waters. We will be back! Walkability: There are great walks behind the hotel - the fells for a challenge, the walks are relatively easy, nice walk into Grasmere.
Great little place to stay. Staff very friendly, family room was large and comfy. The food was very nice and also the breakfast. They really do feed wild badger's. You can watch them at 8pm. Will defo go back someday.Rooms: 5/5
