Auchentoshan Distillery

Story

Auchentoshan distillery is a Single Malt whisky distillery in the west of Scotland. The name Auchentoshan is from Gaelic Achadh an t-Oisein and translates as "the field of the corner". The distillery is also known as "Glasgow's Malt Whisky" due to its close proximity to Glasgow and "the breakfast whisky" due to its sweet and delicate nature. Auchentoshan is located at the foot of the Kilpatrick hills on the outskirts of Clydebank in West Dunbartonshire near the Erskine Bridge. It is one of six malt whisky distilleries in the Scottish Lowlands along with Bladnoch, Glenkinchie and recently Daftmill Distillery, Annandale Distillery and Ailsa Bay Distillery.HistoryAuchentoshan was built in 1800. After its foundation, it changed hands multiple times, and was bought by Eadie Cairns in 1969, who rebuilt it completely. Cairns sold Auchentoshan to Morrison Bowmore distillers in 1984. Suntory invested in Morrison Bowmore in 1989. In 1994, they acquired 100% of its holdings. In May 2014, Beam Inc. and Suntory Holdings Limited merged to create Beam Suntory Inc, who are now the owners of Auchentoshan and other Morrison Bowmore holdings.

Brilliant tour and excellent guide very knowledgeable. The site was easy to get to and easy to park in between the buildings. Short wait in the well stocked onsite shop before the tour and found there is a bar you can use if wanting to visit or stay a lot longer. Tour started in another bar room and explained the background of the distillery and it's history. Then onto part of the building taking you through the whisky making process. All very easy to see and kept informed of what and where we were in the process. Walking into the next building and seeing all the barrels gives you a sense of how much is made here. Whilst here, did get to see the distiller in action making the special onsite bottles and really is a manual process. These are definitely worthy bottles to try as they really are created and produced onsite in a close to traditional way. The end of the tour included the tasting of 2 drams and a discussion of tastes and flavours. The guide was able to even recommend a bottle from another distillery that was using red wine casks when one of the tour party asked questions. Overall a very informative tour and experience. Definitely worthy of any whisky tour to have this one on your list.
This is a distillery in the city of Glasgow or in fact at the outskirts of it. There is a nice gift shop with a good choice of whiskeys, bar and tasting room. The tours and tastings are recommended and very informative. Auchentoshan is the only distillery in Scotland that has a triple distilling process. They are claiming that whisky is very smooth because of that. The Auchentoshan 12yo whisky taste is smooth with sweet vanilla notes and it gets more complicated with age.
I really enjoyed my brewery tour at Auchentoshan! It was fascinating to learn about the unique triple-distillation process and how it contributes to their signature smooth whisky. Our tour guide was amazing – knowledgeable, friendly, and made the whole experience even better. While the brewery is smaller than some breweries I've visited, it's packed with character. And of course, the most important part – the whisky tasting – was fantastic. I'm a big fan of Auchentoshan! If you're a whisky enthusiast, this tour is a must.
A friend and I did the tour on 12th of June at 10:30. This was the £45 tour and I highly recommend it. The tour Brian gave us was worth every penny. Cheers Brian
Went there today and had a brilliant experience....guy on reception was great a greeting us and the kids. I was served by one of the team that was super helpful, clearly passionate, clearly loves working with people and sharing his passion for whisky ...gave us a fantastic experience....being able to go and pour my own bottle, get it labelled up etc how the kids were involved etc made our day and has certainly left the family with warm memories of Auchentoshan and no doubt will be back...even the lad on security on the way in was a kindhearted chap that appreciated visitors coming in and welcomed you with open arms...all that before the tasty tasty whisky which I will have a dram of tonight
Very interesting and engaging tour for anyone passionate about whiskey. Our tour guide Brian was an amazing host and I'd viait again just to have a chat with him. Give that man a raise!
I was super excited to go to this distillery as it was the first time visiting a Lowland Scotch style. Anya was the person who did the tour for me and because I was the only one who signed up for that time frame I received a nice private tour. The place is super nice and I really enjoyed the drive up as well as seeing the inside of the building. The tasting took place in the old malting location. I learned a lot about the history of the the distillery and it was really cool. Anya was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. I throw in the patient bit as I have been suffering some sinus issues so I had to keep stopping between tastings so I could clear em out and actually try to get any flavors from each taste. I really enjoyed what I could taste and what I learned. It was really fun. The hot toddy at the end was a nice treat as well. This place was awesome and highly recommend if you can come to check it out!
Brian our guide was hilarious and very friendly. Very educational tour of a distillery. Thanks for a wonderful tour.
Great experience. Had the whisky tasting. The two cask strength drams were awfull. Thanks March for the great time!
A brilliant tour around a fabulous distillery. Our tour guide Anya was outstanding. Very knowledgeable, very interesting, very articulate and most importantly obviously passionate about what they do and where they work. Gorgeous whisky as well. Well worth a trip out from Glasgow to visit this gem of a lowland distillery.
