Aspex Gallery

About

Artists start at Aspex.

Story

Artists such as Mona Hatoum, Richard Wilson and Susan Collis, all internationally acclaimed, received support from Aspex at an early point in their careers. This work has continued with projects including Emergency, an open submission biennial exhibition, offering key opportunities for artist exposure and professional development.

Since relocating to the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth in 2006, the gallery has focused on finding ways to meaningfully engage its visitors by facilitating connections with artists and revealing the creative process. The participation programme provides activities for toddlers through to pensioners, and its work with children with Special Educational Needs and Autism has been described as exemplary.

The gallery is home to the aspex Cafe Bar, a family friendly space selling fresh lunches, cake and great tea & coffee. You can also buy a range of great gifts, crafts and greetings cards in the aspex Craft & Design space.

Mission

We invite you to explore innovative, contemporary visual art with exhibitions, workshops and events hosted at our inspiring home in the Vulcan Building, a former naval storehouse on the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays.

stunningly full show on Eggs. Really not art at all but a Nursery School exhibition of things found in a kitchen. Embarrassing. It was free but not worth the entry fee.

I love everything that Aspex stands for - especially the opportunities for people with special needs to participate and have their work displayed. It has a lovely atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff.

A great gallery which is away from the Gunwharf crowds. The coffee's good, there loads of unique cards and a little shop with interesting art. As for the art, it's hard to say as it's down to your own taste / interpretation.
