The castle is a ruin and should be surrounded by fences but one has been broken down so you can get in and if you want have a look around but be careful. If you do decide to visit I would go in the morning. When we were there on Saturday 25/03/23 in the afternoon and the local youths were using it as a drinking den. Beside the castle is a small playpark with swings, climbing frame, seesaw etc. Its probably for 7 and under. There is some picnic tables just outside the playpark The views out to isle of Arran and addrossan are worth the walk to the top of the slope. There is a monument to Dr Alexander Macfadzean with benches. There a decent size car park but no toilets.
The gate was open for us to view the castle which was great to see the ruins of history. The entrances to the castle itself has been closed off. Still great 360⁰ views when inside the grounds as per pictures.
First time visiting Ardrossan Castle. Recommend visiting the local museum in Saltcoats as well, has a lot more information and very helpful volunteers.
A five star rating just for the great views of the Ayrshire coastline, Arran, Ailsa Craig and farther on a clear day.nThe castle itself is a ruin now, it was a stronghold of some importance to the area until Cromwell destroyed it.nLots of history to read on the display boards, and a viewpoint direction indicator.nThe Winton Court playpark is nearby for kids, while the adults enjoy the views
Used to spend days exploring the castle as a child. Unfortunately it's now closed off to the public and only open on special occasions, galas, etc. Not much left of the castle, but interesting history and decent views. Children's play park at the top and parking available.
