Story

Arbroath Infirmary is a hospital serving the town of Arbroath and the greater area of Angus, Scotland. Arbroath has a population of over 36,000 and the greater area served is over 60,000. The hospital is situated at the top of Rosemount Road and is part of NHS Tayside. It is separated into two wings. The Queen Mother wing hosts the maternity, minor injuries unit and outpatient department. The main wing consists of the medical unit with a female and a male medical ward, a physiotherapy gym and the X-ray department. There is also a kitchen in the main wing with a dining room. The operating theatre is no longer in use but is located in the main wing. There is no accident and emergency department in this hospital.HistoryThe origins of Arbroath Infirmary can be traced back to 1836 when a dispensary run by local medical practitioners was set up by public subscription to meet an urgent need for medical provision and the care of the poor in Arbroath. Following a typhus epidemic in 1842, a small fever ward for in-patients was set up, and the following year subscriptions began to be collected so an infirmary could be established. The result of these efforts led to the official foundation of the hospital 12 January 1845 at premises in Dundee Road, Arbroath, originally for cases of fever and accidents. By 1855, it had 50 beds, and by 1867, that number had grown to 60. After experiencing overcrowding, it was moved in 1916 to a larger building in Rosemount Road With the advent of the National Health Service in 1947, Arbroath Infirmary became part of the Eastern Region Hospital Board. A new wing was opened by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother on 26 September 1961.

My partner was transferred to this amazing local hospital from ninewelld. Everyone from the charge nurse the nursing team the doctors and physio all made me as a visitor and my partner Dew Larg feel totally involved in his care plan.he is now at home but still receiving support from the nurses and the physios at home. Drew is a fussy eater but the very first 'bowl of soup' he had enabled him to start looking forward to his food. As food is a unit of energy the cooks at Arbroath produced lovely nutritional meals all helped with Drews recovery. We are both do grateful for all the support uou gave both of us while Drew stayed in your medical ward. The atmosphere in the ward was extremely calm and peaceful.which also helped with Drews recovery. Thankyou sll so much for everything you really helped so much .
Wonderful gem of a small hospital. I popped in for a blood test. Cheerful staff, very clean surroundings and got seen on time by a cheerful male nurse. Such a positive experience. So glad I now live in Scotland.
Only have good things to say. I have used the hospital for several reasons X-ray and eye clinic and we have brought my daughter here on a number of occasions too for out of hours advice and guidance and also ultrasound. The staff have always been lovely, caring and attentive. As with all hospitals and health care centres there can be a wait but this is expected these days? There are only so many doctors and nurses to go round. Organisation has always been good. Findings communicated back to GP or consultant in good time. Thank you. You work as well as you can given the resources and funding you are provided with!
Good service and taken on time. All staff were very helpful and pleasant
I write on behalf of my husband, Colin Lockhart who was recently an inpatient. A model to many hospitals in it care and friendliness ARBROATH sets an excellent example.
