After a hard morning braving London's manic Christmas shoppers we pulled in to Allans before advancing on Selfridges. On the surface, the cafe looks like one of those family run Italian cafes that have amazing food and fast service. The reality was quite the opposite; Three of four in our party considered the food some of the worst they had eaten, the cold drinks were served in plastic cups and some of the crockery even had Ikea barcodes stuck to it. Added to that the bloke taking the money was rude. I highly recommend avoiding this place.
On the face of it a really nice looking cafe - However coffee was of the standard one would get in a greasy spoon albeit marginally better presented. Cakes are very good but the coffee could be better. It was a bit loud with the music playing in the background with the speaker next to the table at floor level! Probably would only visit again for a juice and food rather than coffee - Bella Italia down the road would have been a safer and yet more boring option.
Such a disappointment. I used to visit Allan's for brunch during my university days and recently returned for a quick coffee and cake with a friend. However, the service was laughably bad, my coffee was lukewarm, they were only accepting cash no cards at the till and the music they were playing was the most embarrassingly awful, insipid soft-pop in existence. It's so sad but this place has turned into a major tourist dive with prices to match, so I won't be back.
The atmosphere is good, very cozy and warm, I liked spending my afternoon reading a book with afternoon tea here :
Food poor, drinks poor, typical central London standard, better places out there.
