All Souls Bolton

About

Creating a new space from an old church. All Souls for all souls.

Story

The Victorian church of All Souls is located in the Crompton area of Bolton and has been redundant since 1986. In 2004 local community members approached the owner of the building - The Churches Conservation Trust - to explore putting it back into use as a community facility and social space.

Following extensive consultation with the local community and a project development grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, CCT and the charity All Souls Bolton has transformed All Souls into a new community building. An innovative design has seen the installation of pods within the church creating ‘a building within a building’, a design that has left the historic fabric largely untouched.

All Souls is now a thriving business and community centre with a focus on heritage and education. We are pleased to host as tenants the community-focused companies Beanstalk, Starts With You, Boo Consultancy, Tabeth Homecare, the Flowhesion Foundation, and Halliwell Local History Society, as well as Rosanna who runs Cafe @ All Souls, serving Italian-inspired food made with love.

The vision for the next few years is to be an asset for Bolton, both as a hub for local businesses and a place where people come together to experience and to learn and to celebrate heritage.

Mission

To improve the lives of the people of Bolton, strengthen community spirit, and prove that beautiful historical buildings can be of use once more, saving themselves from decay and demolition in the process.

We want to create a unique programme of events and activities that will draw people from all around Bolton and beyond to a building of national importance which was once at the centre of a community. We try to offer something for everyone, from afternoon tea to a sponsored abseil down the bell tower and embrace the history of the local area as we try to build a brighter future.

I'm attending a course here. It's impressive how the church has been converted into offices and classrooms. They have so many free activities on for the community - chair based exercises, men's groups, craft groups. They've kept the feel of the church whilst modernising and make the most of a historic building.
A majestic building with a fine ring of Taylor's 1881 bells. The tenor weighs ,1204 kg and the ring is in the key of E.
It was fascinating to see how this old church has been transformed into a community centre brimming with life.
Recently attended a meeting there. It's a lovely building and the staff pleasant and helpful. Especially as I thought I'd lost my car keys and the ladies on duty went out of their way to help me look
Son goes to a group that uses the space once a week
Nice location, and office space inside a beautiful church, well kept and silent, located in a calm but accessible part of the city. They still have a active church along with office space.
This building has been beautifully and sensitively renovated in such a way as to create a vibrant, functional combination of community centre and office space while keeping intact the original features of the building's life as a church. It's a modern masterpiece.
General meeting place for business religious and social
The Church of All Souls is a redundant Anglican church in Astley Street, Astley Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. As of 2010, the church is being converted into a community centre. The church was built between 1878 and 1881 and paid for by Thomas Greenhalgh, an Evangelical mill-owner. Thomas inherited the money from his brother Nathaniel, who had died in 1877, aged 60. It was one of two churches in the area financed from this inheritance, the other being St Saviour's. The total cost of the church, including fittings, the stained glass, the organ, and the boundary walls, was £23,000 equivalent to £2,340,000 in 2019. The local population had grown during the second half of the 19th century, and the church was intended to serve the people working in the nearby mills. It was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin. The church was planned to seat a congregation of about 800, giving them all a good view of the proceedings, and an opportunity to hear the sermon. The contractors were Cordingley and Stopford of Manchester. The church was consecrated in 1881 by Dr J. Fraser, Bishop of Manchester. Few changes have been made to the church since then. A war memorial was added to commemorate the parishioners who had died serving in the First World War. During the 20th century the size of the local population was declining, and in 1962 the parish was combined with that of St James in Waterloo Road. In 1970 the stained glass windows in the tower were removed. They had depicted the Creation and were made by Shrigley and Hunt, but had been damaged by vandalism. The church closed in 1986 and was vested in the Churches Conservation Trust. The building has since been redeveloped and in December 2014 opened as a business and community centre, managed by a small charity set up for this purpose, known as All Souls Bolton.
Lovely church conversation with lots of interesting history of Bolton, but disappointed with curry club offer. Advertised as "all you can eat for £4" which gives the impression that it will be a buffet style of Indian dishes, but it wasn't. Only one main dish and a side dish with rice. No vegetarian main course, so we could only eat Bombay potatoes .....for £4! So left. Very disappointed. Was told that they had a vegetarian main the previous time...., but that didn't help us then!!!! this is what you could have had lol Thanks
